Computer Contest2005: CIPro announces Computer Contest.....
Posted by cipro on Thursday, June 16 @ 12:14:49 CDT (1145 reads)
Computer Contest Series
To:
CIPRO Members
From:
CIPRO Board of Directors
Date:
16 June 2005
Project Objectives:
To promote participation of members and students in one or more contest
involving solving problems with computers.
Creation of Problems:
Problems, or ideas of creating a problem will be solicited from members.
For example, to create a program on spread sheet to play tic-tac-tao;
a program to calculate GST; a program to process a cashier transaction;
a fast program to search for 100 prime numbers; a program to schedule school buses; etc.
Rules:
In each contest, the Board will post a problem to the members via e-mail and
also publish it on CIPRO's web site, along with specific detail of rules and
requirements.
For example:
1. Deadline
2. Problem's name
3. Format of answer
4. Minimum requirements on answer
5. Return address
6. Contestant's info.
The contestant (under age 21 and up to 2 in a team) must use computer to resolve
the posted problem. The answer, in a format of spread sheet or other as specified,
must be submitted to a designated contest mail box before a deadline.
At this stage, the contestant(s) can consult anyone for help and multiple
answers are allowed. However, the contestant must understand how the answer
should work because if chosen, he/she must present the answer personally
in the final contest with no help !
Team contestant is formed by a student plus a friend (or a guardian) to enter
the contest. The idea is to promote team work and to encourage more participation
as young students are sometimes too shy. Either one in the team can do the
presentation at the final but age may make a difference in score.
A judging panel will choose the best contestants (e.g. 5 to 10 finalists)
based on their answers and invite them to the final contest.
Each finalist, (team contestant counts as one) will be asked to present
their answer and ways to enhance the program.
The judges will give out scores (max. 100) and may use a handicap system to help
equalize the age difference.
For example:
University student (18-21) gets zero;
Age 17 gets 10;
Age 16 gets 20;
Age 15 gets 30;
Age 14 gets 40;
Age 13 gets 50;
Age 12 gets 60;
Age 11 gets 70;
Age 10 and under gets 80.
The judging panel has the right to change the rules before the final contest starts.
Prizes:
Each finalist must participate in the final contest in order to receive the prize,
which is a $20 worth of certificate, i.e. Chapters, Future Shop,
and etc. The champion will receive an extra $80 worth of certificate.
Person who submitted the chosen contest problem also receives a $50 worth of certificate.
The judging panel may select one champion for each age group if the answers are
deem to be excellent and yet the age difference of the contestants are too wide.
